Why don’t African parents take rape seriously?

  • 0

I have been running a rape safe space for the last four years after my friend was raped. Most of the ladies benefitting from it have not been able to get any kind of support from their parents. The parents have told them to not talk about it at all. Why is there so much hypocrisy or to them, rape is not serious?

African parents don’t take rape seriously because of shame that is associated with it as well as judgement from the society.

because of fear of coming out to speak and shame that comes with it from the community.

I think that’s associated with taboos linking rape to uncleanliness. In most cultures, rape brings shame to the whole family and in some, even future generations.
