What does respect mean in relationships and how do you show it?

Respect in a relationship can mean accepting someone regardless of misunderstandings or differences. New couples have this sense of honour and importance that they show each other.

When time goes by, this fades away and the “true colours” of your friend or partner come out. How do you maintain or foster a culture of respect in a relationship in spite of major disagreements?
