There has been some effort taken to recognising our unsung heroes, from the freedom fighters, to sports icons who have raised our flag with pride across the world. This does not seem to be enough though since every once in a while we will hear a story or news about how they are mistreated or even forgotten like the story of wangari maathai. How can this be changed so that we can have a place for such people both now and in the future?
What will it take to develop a culture of celebrating unsung heroes?

Media is choked with breaking news about crime and corruption in the morning, sensesional gossip and celebrity entertainment in the afternoon, and political riff fuff in the evening. With meaningless advertisements and unplanned programing scattered in between all this, the clock just can’t accommodate a sweet hero story which won’t have as much revenue.
Government is either campaigning to stay in power or get back in. Focusing on unsung heroes only reduces their time to politic and brings up potential opponents in form of the unsung. In short, it is not their priority.
With most of your news and information coming from the media or politicians, you’ll never experience the true heart of the greatest people who walk among us.
