Tanzania shares borders with eight countries in East Africa. The Tanzania mainland is bounded by Uganda, Lake Victoria, and Kenya to the north, by the Indian Ocean to the east, by Mozambique, Lake Nyasa, Malawi, and Zambia to the south and southwest, and by Lake Tanganyika, Burundi, and Rwanda to the west.
Kenya is Tanzania’s largest neighbor in terms of trade and tourism. Relations between Tanzania and Uganda have been strained at times due to disputes over the management of Lake Victoria. Tanzania has strong historical ties with Malawi and Zambia. The country also shares close cultural and economic connections with Burundi and Rwanda.
