Drugs and substance abuse are on the rise among all age sets. I believe it’s has been a long time coming. First, we were raised and conditioned with fear, and as adults, we have the freedom to do as we wish. A sad/gloomy educational/economical outlook in the republic leads people to to alternative lifestyles to vent their frustrations. Notice that many creative spaces allow for the use use of drugs to help balance their books. Look at Kenya, over 80% if the republic is under 40 years of age, big everything around us doesn’t seem to put that into consideration. Job openings with years and years of experience required, tendering processes requiring monies our joint clans can’t raise, the falling shilling, high cost of living, poor legislation to stabilise the economy, the indifference of the civil service in attending to us, police officers profiling youth, the provincial Administration always in our necks. Imagine being the majority, yet disenfranchised, but the blame for misrule and destruction of the nation’s hope/dreams lies on your shoulders, while those who kill us slowly fund the propaganda.
Alcoholism is the new escape. That temporary relief from a list of problems, blames, failed marriages, unmet pious standards. We are at the casm is sociocultural change, and the psychological games have most needing a way to vent.
People now live for the next high, the next gig, the next fad, the next craze. Whatever it takes to temporarily forget their trauma, hardships, realities of misrule, a bleak retirement, absurd school curriculum, inflation, stalled dreams. A question that should follow is: How are there many new and upcoming establishments, even in the coldest and remote towns? Who are the investors? What are their alignments? Source of funds? Drug lords?
should drug addiction be declared a national disaster? is it that bad?
its because of high unemployment rates hence a lot of youths are idle making them drug addicts. secondly its also as a result of civilization what youths see on social media most of them tend to experiment
Drugs and alcohol addiction are on the rise in Kenya this is because of unemployment of many youths and also drugs nowadays are easily available so if anyone want to use they know where to get them.
Factors such as peer pressure, poor self image, low religiosity, poor school performance, parental rejection, family dysfunction, under or over-controlling by parents and divorce are great influences nowadays.
Drugs addiction is the end result of a dependency that one develops as they escape daily challenges or seek deeper pleasure through different substances. Alcohol in Kenya has been celebrated as a patriotic thing that is even related to holidays and weekends.
I know there’s a drug problem in the country but it has always been there and we are only giving it attention right now which is a good thing. However, our parents abused drugs without the leisure of information and at a time when there was such a huge stigma against drug addicts. Most were even afraid to seek help because of this stigma. right now things have improved but there is still areas where specific drugs or substances are more prone.
for example mombasa and kimbu both have drug problems but on very different levels. From the type of drug, social support, amount of money needed and more things.
Use of drugs and substances currently has become the new trend or fashion amongst most youths today, being found that you don’t smoke or drink in a society that does all that kinda sounds illegal or old school or too spiritual and this most likely influences teens to try the new fashion which is usage of drugs. You can say it’s about peer influence or pressure but some of the users do it decisively.
STRESSFUL ENVIRONMENTS
While not every person turns to alcohol to relieve stress, some people do. When a person has a stressful job, for example, they may be more likely to drink heavily. This is often the case with certain occupations such as doctors and nurses – their day-to-day lives can be extremely stressful. To lower this risk factor, take the time to de-stress with healthy methods, like reading a good book, exercising or taking a nap.
DRINKING AT AN EARLY AGE; those who begin drinking at an early age are more likely to have an alcohol problem or a physical dependence on alcohol as they get older. Not only is this because drinking may become a comfortable habit, but also because the body’s tolerance levels may increase.
MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS LIKE DEPRESSION
Anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder or other mental health issues can increase the risk of alcoholism. It’s easy to turn to alcohol when a person is feeling anxious or depressed – and the effects of alcohol may seem to temporarily ease those feelings. This can resort to drinking more and more, leading to alcohol addiction.
TAKING ALCOHOL WITH MEDICINE
Some medicines can increase the toxic effects of alcohol on the body. When a person continually takes alcohol with their medications, they may become addicted to the effects that follow – some of which have the capability to be very dangerous and even life-threatening.
FAMILY HISTORY; If you have a parent or other relative who is an alcoholic, your risk of alcoholism automatically increases. Part of this is due to genetics, but the other part has to do with your environment. Spending time around people who drink heavily or abuse alcohol can influence you to do the same.
Joblessness is the biggest contributing factor. The youth have nothing else to do, reason for which they fall prey to peer pressure. Also, they need something to spend their time on
most people take drugs as a consolation to relieve stress and from day to day events. Though some take them for leisure and others due to peer pressure
Drug and alcohol addiction is becoming so common in kenya because of the poor foundation we are laying for our children. Since drugs and alcohol are found everywhere these days, parents have to lay a strong foundation for their children by teaching them the effects of drug abuse and alcohol use. By doing this, children will interact with this staff but they will not use it.
Most people are stressed because of the economy, food prices, fuel prices etc Things have become hard everywhere. The little one has ends up in alcohol or drugs just to forget the frustration at that time. I know tomorrow the problem is still there but at least someone hasn’t thought about it for a few hours…
depression is the answer to all this
