Why don’t we(Kenyans) support the local tourism industry?

  • 2

Having worked in the hospitality industry for a while I noticed that very few Kenyans support our local establishments and tourism locations. The number has indeed picked up and many operators are using influencers to push for visibility but I do feel we are still not there yet unlike the support most give to locations out of Kenya. Definitely its fine to travel out and I don’t oppose that but why is the local support lower. is it lack of knowledge about what we have, are the rates too high, is it preference, is the marketing not good enough, are our services poor, are the locations not appealing or what could it be?

Life in Kenya is becoming unbearable, most households can only afford food to put on the table and they do not have extra cash to visit places since there is cash involve it’s not free.

The cost of living in Kenya is so high. To make matters worse, the 8-5 work days take away most of the time that would have been scheduled for leisure. There’s little tone left for activities like location tourism because everyone is chasing the bag and the few who have it don’t have enough time to enjoy it. That’s why our game parks are filled with while people who come to enjoy the soft life here.

okay I think it will be good if we said that it’s all about preferences. One can prefer to visit neighbouring countries or abroad for enjoyment and leisure to visiting the various recreational locations within the country and this could be because our own local people know that the local enjoyment sectors are filled with tourists from outside so they should also visit their various countries to do the same. Or one can just visit outside country because they want to or just prefers other countries to local.

It’s expensive and considering the cost of living in our country, i would rather do leisure activities that are pocket friendly.

I think it has all to do with marketing. Kenyans do not prioritize local tourism because they don’t think it is worth spending a penny on.
