Dear Youthful Candidates,
With the current political dynamics, and of course with the known financial deficiencies amongst most of us, my experiential and professional advice would be:
1. Localize your thinking and campaign approach because every position is very local in its own context, and will be determined by the local dynamics.
2. For your own health and safety, absent of ulcers, hypertension and burn out due to unnecessary physical & financial overstretches:
a) Don’t struggle to lead opinion polls that are mostly based on “sherehe”, don’t compete in generosity contests in funerals and other social places. . . because every generous politician is always the best at that time to those beneficiaries, neither should you waste your time proving yourself to people who have no impact on your victory or loss.
b) Don’t seek fame just because your opponents are famous. Focus on your numbers, coz that’s what the RO will base on and declare, not the fame. Fame, just like political generosity, is very expensive, dangerous and can be suicidal.
c) Don’t try to buy someone who has already been bought, instead, invest your money and energy on virgin potential. Once you know how many people you need to win and how and where to get them, focus on them, get them and retain them, but retain them so well that they can even voluntarily initiate referrals in your favor.
d) Don’t compete “ kuchafua area” with someone whose source of campaign funds you don’t know.
3. When you don’t have money, just wake up, pray, and after you have prayed, ask yourself if there is any home, place or person that you can visit, and be listened to without being blackmailed or extorted, and visit them. . . There will always be somewhere you can go and someone you can talk to, even if it’s the same place, as long as you have a chance of meeting one new person and convert them at no cost, or at the “goodwill cost” of your “host”. . . Call it the “actualization of positive opportunism through leveraging”.
4. But most importantly, have your “sure people” that can win you the seat, ready in your database, so that incase you get any “finishing power bullets”, you have your targeted sure people to spend on, because without your sure people that you can “control on Election Day”, you will end up throwing parties in markets, homes and Chang’aa dens to increase your fame, not numbers, sometimes even for drunkards who won’t even turn up to vote.
