There is definitely an interlinkage relationship that culture and society have with one another. Both culture and society are important however we confuse the idea of culture with society.
The role of culture in society seems to be the creation of language, norms, values, and artefacts, thoughts, behaviours and beliefs, which are not always beneficial; like FGM and witchcraft.
Societies on the other hand create mental boarders from small towns, through countries, to broader cultural groupings – which has also brought both good (ethnic heritage, spirituality, community) and bad (genocide, xenophobia, colonisation, slavery, religion).
So, between society and culture, which one comes before the other? Are they mutually exclusive and can they function without each other?
Society is nothing but an organised group of people who live together and are connected with one another. It is not exactly same as culture, which can be understood as the way of living of people living in a particular place or region. Every society has its culture, but they are not the same thing. Although, they cannot exist without each other.
Culture has certain values, custom, beliefs and social behaviour, whereas society encompasses people who share mutual beliefs, values and way of living. This article attempts to shed light on the differences between society and culture in a detailed manner.
Culture also plays an important role to establish discipline in a society.
Culture involves the ancient set rules that guides the conduct of people in a community, while the society are the people living around you and are the ones who makes sure that things are done according to their culture. The two are related in the above way.
