Have you ever suffered any form of discrimination because of your ethnic group? What was it and how did you handle it?

  • 2

A lot of people are denied opportunities just because of where they come from or because they belong to a certain ethnic group or tribe. Worse still, they are treated badly just because of their ethnicity.

I want to find out if anyone has experience tribalism or bad treatment because of their ethnic and how they handled it?

Tribalism is real and it exists.I haven’t experienced it but my friends did and for sure it can be traumatizing.

I personally experienced tribalism from my university lecturer. He had issues because I had not chosen him to supervise my masters thesis. I chose a professor who lived with a disability and from my tribe, but tribe had nothing to do with it.
Anyways this other lecturer frustrated me, frustrated my efforts as a student in that department. One time during elections in Kenya in 2017, he told me in Swahili, “You Kikuyus will know that the world is round.” (What goes around comes back around). That is why he had closed his office door while I was inside. He said it behind closed doors. I was too naive to imagine that I should be recording a conversation with one who is supposed to be my mentor?
That threat was the beginning of my university confusion… I ended up finishing my masters degree in 5 years instead of the original 2 years. If only I had support from him as head of department I would have done much better.
I remember one time he asked why I was getting a passport document, he said in Swahili to me again in the parking lot, “You Kikuyus are wondering where you will run away to?”
That broke me. I never returned to his office for assistance ever again!
The Rwanda Genocide should be an example enough surely!

Not me, but a lot of public service positions are filled with incompetents due to ethnicity. It is the reason KE remains in a rut.The most competent humans of Kenya can never get the most influential (of policy) positions!
