I know this may vary from one country to another but should male and female prisoners be treated differently?
There is already a lot of gender inequality and bias in the criminal justice system. For example, women need pads and other necessities that may not be a need for men. However, this is not prioritized and women have to endure a more harsh environment than men.
There is also the issue of sexism where women are at a higher risk of being molested but it is worse for men because it involves initiation into homosexuality that involves forced sodomy and rape which may not be a serious problem in women’s prisons as it is for men.
Male vs female criminal sentencing periods seem to vary where women are usually pardoned or given lighter punishments for the same crime. This is especially seen when it is a crime passion, the gender disparity favors women. This is also evident in most causes of gender-based violence by women towards men that result in crimes of passion.
Gender bias and sexism in criminal justice could be a hidden cause of many other unrelated social issues. It seems there will always be gender differences in sentencing when we have a clear criminal justice system that outlines the law. If the prison system is indeed meant to be a correctional facility, which it’s clearly not, then maybe this could be solved.
Law is law irregardless of one’s gender. If you want law to treat you well then abide by the laws.
Both men and women should be treated equally, no one is above the law.
No one should be treated better than the other. An offender is an offender. However, all offenders should be protected and treated as humans regardless of where they are doing their time.
