What are your thoughts on Halima Aden quitting the fashion industry?

  • 1

Halima Aden announced she’s quitting fashion due to her religious beliefs. She said she felt the fashion industry has made her ‘stray’ and ‘lose her soul’. I can’t help but feel somewhat disappointed because of everything she’s achieved.

For a Kenyan Somali woman refugee, she broke so many barriers including becoming the first Muslim Supermodel to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated wearing a burkini. I completely understand her reasons but what’re your thoughts on religion ‘limiting’ her or ‘helping’ her authenticate herself more?

Halima’a story is a bittersweet one for me. It’s still a beautiful journey regardless of whether she sticks to her current understanding of herself, her faith, hijab or not, this 23 yo young woman is at the beginning of a life expanding and enriching dialogue with herself, the modeling industry and her spirituality.

Very valid. It was amazing to watch a Hijab wearing woman on a runway. I read an article that said she often felt ‘uncomfortable’ during photoshoots, something a lot of models have complained about. Do you think because of the standards Muslim women are expected to live by might’ve contributed to her decision?
