This is a very good question Geraldo. Practising in private practice is tricky in Kenya. Of course we also know that the government has not put in much effort except the Mental Health Act.
Mental Health in Kenya has a long way to go as I believe all schools and hospitals should have psychologists who can follow patients with psychosomatic symptoms who are most patients in these hospitals.
So personally I have worked in a broad range of fields except private practice. People who have established private practices are kind of skeptical about employing or expanding, so I have been turned down several times.
I have worked in more of social work settings and in hospitals as a HIV Testing Services Provider… That’s the closest I have been to practising.
The good thing is with psychology I just can’t do things the same way everyone is doing them. At my various capacities, psychology has been a tool for change in the lives of the people I encountered.
If you want me to be more specific on something, please don’t hesitate to ask.
