General Analysis of the Most Visited Websites in Kenya 2020:
Best New Performers v/s Dropped Websites:
- nation.co.ke is now the most popular website in Kenya but was at number 12 last year a time like this, replacing standardmedia.co.ke which is now at number 2.
- Mpasho.co.ke and Ghafla.com also joined the top 10 list from number 19 and 11 respectively.
- The greatest riser however is K24tv.co.ke which did not even make our list last year but is now at number 9!
E-commerce and Business Websites:
By category, the most visited websites in Kenya are News sites followed by social media or entertainment websites (including whatsapp and Netflix). Betting or Gambling Sites and E-commerce or online shopping sites seem to be a hard sell for Kenyans.
Actually, the entire top 10 list of websites in Kenya is purely news based sites with the exception of Jumia.co.ke which is the only e-commerce website on the list.
This indicates that Kenyans are not comfortable doing a lot of their shopping online, and most people prefer to buy from smaller merchants on instagram or facebook as opposed to actual e-commerce websites. Maybe there is a gap or major online shopping is just not cut out for Kenyans.
Betting, Gambling and x-rated Websites:
Porn websites attract more visitors each month than Amazon, Netflix, and Twitter combined – worldwide. Astonishingly, Kenyans have reduces their consumption of porn and gambling.
Betin and Sportpesa were at number 7 and 4 respectively, according to our list from 2019. Right now, there is not a single porn or gambling/betting website on the top 15 list which was not the case as early as last year. The first betting site comes in at number 15!
Reasons behind this drop:
- Sanctions by the government (for gambling and betting sites)
- Censorship by search engines (mostly for pornography websites)
- Porn sites not revealing actual numbers of visits.
- Use of VPN’s and private browsers like TOR to mask location.
News, Social Media and Entertainment Websites:
The most visited website in Kenya is Nation.co.ke, a local news site. This ranks higher than huge entertainment and social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and Netflix.
One indication is the need for localised content that the bigger sites may not provide. Secondly, we could have the same information but the local news sites have the upperhand in personalising and relating the stories to cultural realities.
Social Media definitely plays a huge role but with the on-going trends of fake news and uncontrolled content that often leads to issues like cyber bullying, people may slowly continue gravitating to local sites that speak their ‘Language’, reiterate their beliefs and reinforce indigenous culture.
This can be both good and lethal at the same time but atleast the people have a choice. Let’s see what they will go with.
Honourable Mentions: Significant Websites every Kenyan should Visit:
To clarify, this is a community curated list and not an endorsement but rather a collection of unlikely websites that may not be the most popular websites but are worth your awareness.
Please share your suggestions in the comments below and we will evaluate and continue editing this list to make it better and more significant:
- theelephant.info – First, we have The Elephant, established in 2016. It is a platform for dialogue, discovering the pursuit of Truth, epitomised by a willingness to re-imagine state and society to the extent of unearthing their relationship in order to restore a balance of power – social, economic and political – in society especially for the marginalised, alienated and dispossessed.
- trackcorruption.org – Secondly, we have Track Corruption which was shows estimates of how much is lost to corruption in Kenya. It plans to show who is involved in corruption and how many scandals they have. It’s code will soon be open sourced so that volunteers from other African countries can track the thieves in their countries.
- kilimo.go.ke – Third on the list is a Government website belonging to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Irrigation. Unlike most Government websites, this one is regularly updated, well structured and doubles up as a reliable information resource. Especially for people interested in Agriculture.
- owaahh.com – Fourth, you might need to sit down for this one… Owaahh has a relationship with words. He understands the art of emotions and can make your senses come alive just by his writing. However, what puts him on this list is his courage to take on complex scandals and break them down into digest-able information for the common person.
What’s the Accuracy of the Most Visited Websites in Kenya list?
For precision and accuracy, we cross-referenced data from Similar Web, Alexa, SEM Rush, ahrefs, and Website Outlook. All these platforms aim to show domain popularity.
However, they do it in different ways. So which one is better and more accurate? Here’s a brief comparison between Alexa by Amazon and SimilarWeb , since they are the most popular website ranking platforms. See the comparison below and read our Disclaimer!
The biggest question asked with regards to website traffic is this: Why are my Alexa and SimilarWeb rankings different? Well, here is the answer: They are not. These are just two different platforms calculating data in different ways. So, Alexa verses SimilarWeb, which one is more accurate? It all depends on your goals and the specific data you are looking for.
Comparison between Alexa and SimilarWeb. Which one is more accurate?
Obviously, SimilarWeb has many more features than Alexa. It has been said to be more beneficial for digital marketers who are focussed on general reach and customer behaviour because of it’s useful tools for studying trends. However, SimilarWeb ranking is predominantly based on the estimated number of monthly unique visitors alone.
On the other hand, Alexa, which takes into account more engagement metrics like pageviews, bounce rate and time spent on site as well as monthly unique visitors. Millions of internet users have Alexa toolbar installed, which gathers browsing habits and user information to calculate website ranking. Since we are focussing on website ranking and not all the other features SimilarWeb offers, we will give preference to Alexa.
This list is based on actual engagement metrics, optimisation, user experience and not just raw traffic or popularity. That’s why sites with 10k monthly unique visitors can rank higher than sites with over 100k. This is mainly due to a higher engagement. A good example is Adult Sites, that may have high traffic but not the other engagement metrics. (Also, consider the use of private incognito modes and VPN’s)
Now that you know why some of your expected results may be different, let’s dive in a little further…

Before we dive into the detailed analytics, watch this overview of the Top 10 Most Visited Websites in Kenya as at July, 2017. It will give you more perspective on the data in the rest of this article.

About 9.08% of the visitors come from search engines which is terrible. They should perhaps get some of the Dennis Oliech and Joey Muthengi advert budget and work on their search engine optimisation. The most searched phrase by users as at January 2019 is “betin”. (Oh, well)
People tend to visit afrtrk.com, google.com, popads.net, sjunbi-tracker.com and sportpesa.co.ke immediately before visiting this website. (Again, it is interesting that sportpesa is on this list again…)

Local and Global Ranking:
ecitizen.go.ke has a Local Rank (including international websites) of 15. While its Global Rank is 13,369 (which has gone down 1,145 positions over the last 3 months). Which I must say is exceptionally good for any government website.
The main website related or similar to ecitizen.go.ke based on content and audience overlap is ntsa.go.ke. (another government website doing quite well. However, google is known to have a favouring bias towards government websites . Especially those ending with .gov .go.[ke] extensions.)

People visiting from Kenya account for 88.1% of ecitizen.go.ke visitors. With an almost equal female to male ratio. The visitors are an equal blend of people with no collage education to graduate students. Most of the access the website from home, school or work. (A behaviour we have only seen with betting sites.)

Vsitors look at an average of 8.84 pages and spend approximately 15 minutes and 47 seconds on ecitizen.go.ke every day. This is the site with the highest visitor retention time. Perhaps this is one of the major contributing factors to its high ranking.
Data, Numbers and Statistics:
ecitizen.go.ke has a bounce rate of 13.60%. Definitely the lowest on this list. Actually, very few websites on the entire world wide web can boast such a low bounce rate while having high ranking at the same time.) About 23.10% of the visitors come from search engines (Which is really good considering what other sites have to do for rankings). The most searched phrase by users as at January 2019 is “ecitizen”. So, What’s the Conclusion about Most Visited Websites in Kenya?
Looking at this data, you can clearly see how powerfully positioned media is in Kenya. This power, unchecked and moderated is what develops into propaganda, gutter press and Fake News.
They are literary controlling the narrative and deciding our future, present and even past! All that can change now. A great example is seen in this article that explores the Manipulation seen in the very Founding of Kenya as a Country. It exposes just how clueless we could be about our History even in this age of information.
