Macklemore and Ed Sheeran Were Friends Before This: Can Their Relationship Survive the Dispute?

Macklemore and Ed Sheeran appear to have had a friendship spanning roughly 13 years, with the two artists collaborating publicly and sharing a long professional history. That relationship is now under serious strain after Macklemore was removed from Sheeran’s Loop Tour following his pro-Palestinian remarks at shows in New Jersey. Macklemore described the conversations with Sheeran as painful but said the friendship would not simply disappear because of one disagreement.

The public evidence so far points to a relationship that has been damaged by a fundamental disagreement rather than one that has definitively ended. Macklemore has criticized the circumstances surrounding his removal while still referring to Sheeran as a longtime friend and expressing respect for him. Sheeran, meanwhile, has said he respects Macklemore and attempted to mediate the dispute, while maintaining his own decision not to use his concerts as a political platform. Whether the friendship survives will likely depend less on their opposing public positions than on whether they can separate that disagreement from their personal relationship.

A friendship built before the current dispute

Macklemore and Sheeran have known each other since the early 2010s and have crossed paths professionally for years. They performed together publicly and collaborated on music, including the 2016 song “Growing Up.”

Their relationship therefore predates the current political dispute by more than a decade.

That history helps explain why Macklemore’s public statements about the fallout have not sounded like a simple denunciation of Sheeran. In announcing his removal from the tour, Macklemore called Sheeran a longtime friend and “brother” and said their conversations had been rooted in love and respect despite ultimately producing a fundamental disagreement.

That is materially different from saying the friendship is over.

What actually caused the rupture?

The immediate conflict concerns Macklemore’s political statements during his opening performances on Sheeran’s tour.

At MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on September 4, Macklemore told the audience that one reason he wanted to participate in the tour was to use large stadium stages to say “Free Palestine.” He also performed “Hind’s Hall,” his 2024 protest song about the war in Gaza. The following night, he again discussed Palestine and addressed Jewish members of the audience.

The remarks prompted criticism and a petition from the Israeli American Council seeking his removal.

Messina Touring Group, the promoter, subsequently said multiple venues on the remaining U.S. tour dates had indicated that they would not allow concerts to proceed with Macklemore on the lineup. Macklemore was then removed from the remaining U.S. shows.

Macklemore has attributed the pressure in particular to Robert Kraft, owner of Gillette Stadium, and said Kraft rallied other stadium owners. Kraft has separately defended the decision, saying Macklemore’s recent actions and what he described as a broader history of antisemitic rhetoric and imagery crossed a line for the venue.

Those are competing accounts of responsibility and motive. The public record establishes the removal and the promoter’s explanation, but not every allegation made by the parties.

Sheeran says he tried to preserve the relationship—and the tour

Sheeran’s subsequent statement is significant because he did not characterize the dispute as a personal break with Macklemore.

He said Macklemore had been given freedom to choose his setlist and that he respected his convictions. Sheeran also said he was involved in discussions with promoters, venues and activists on both sides in an attempt to find a resolution. Ultimately, he said, the promoter and venues made the decision and it was final.

Sheeran’s own position is that his concerts should remain spaces intended to bring people together rather than platforms for political advocacy. He has emphasized that choosing not to speak publicly about the Israel-Palestine conflict does not mean he has no personal views about it.

That creates the central personal tension between the two musicians.

Macklemore sees political expression as something he is unwilling to suppress for professional convenience. Sheeran has chosen a different approach to his own concerts. Neither position necessarily requires the two men to end their friendship, but the disagreement is substantial enough to affect how they work together.

Macklemore has left the door open

Perhaps the strongest indication that the relationship has not been definitively severed is Macklemore’s own language.

After describing the disagreement as painful and fundamental, he said he did not believe the friendship would disappear because of it.

That is important because the dispute has created circumstances in which continuing the friendship could itself be difficult.

Macklemore has lost a major touring opportunity after making a political statement. Sheeran is facing criticism from some musicians and fans who believe he should have taken a stronger position. The remaining support acts—including Finneas, Lukas Graham, Aaron Rowe and Beoga—subsequently withdrew from the tour in solidarity with Macklemore.

The disagreement is therefore no longer confined to two people privately trying to work things out.

The friendship now has a professional boundary around it

One possible way forward is for the two artists to preserve their personal relationship while accepting that they have different approaches to public advocacy.

That would not require either man to change his position.

Macklemore could continue speaking publicly about Palestine. Sheeran could continue declining to make political advocacy part of his concerts. They could also choose not to collaborate professionally for some time.

The practical question is whether either artist regards the other’s actions as a personal betrayal rather than simply a disagreement over principles.

The public statements so far do not establish that either has reached that point.

The touring fallout makes reconciliation harder

The problem is that the dispute has consequences beyond the friendship.

Macklemore’s removal was followed by the withdrawal of the other remaining support acts. Beoga’s departure is especially consequential because the Irish group was performing with Sheeran as part of his touring band.

That means Sheeran now has to deal with the operational consequences of a dispute in which he says he was not the final decision-maker.

It also means Macklemore’s departure has become a symbol for other musicians who believe artists should be able to speak about political issues onstage.

The more the controversy expands, the harder it becomes to resolve purely as a private disagreement between friends.

Their previous collaboration could matter

The history between Macklemore and Sheeran gives both artists a reason to distinguish their personal relationship from their current disagreement.

They have already worked together successfully and built familiarity over many years. That history cannot erase the present conflict, but it provides a basis for understanding why Macklemore continued to describe Sheeran warmly even while criticizing the decision surrounding the tour.

It also means that a future reconciliation would not necessarily require either artist to publicly abandon his current position.

Friends do not have to agree on every political issue. The more difficult question is whether one person’s actions have crossed a line the other cannot accept.

The biggest test may come after the tour

The immediate touring controversy makes reconciliation particularly difficult because every interaction can become part of the public story.

If Sheeran and Macklemore meet privately, it may remain private. If they collaborate again, that would be a visible signal that their professional relationship has recovered. If they continue to criticize each other’s positions or avoid one another publicly, that would suggest the disagreement remains unresolved.

But absence of a public reconciliation should not automatically be interpreted as the end of their friendship.

Public figures can deliberately keep personal relationships away from the media, especially when the underlying issue involves an intensely divisive political conflict.

What would indicate that the friendship has survived?

There are several developments that would provide stronger evidence than social-media speculation:

DevelopmentWhat it would indicate
Private contact without public escalationPossible effort to preserve the friendship
Public acknowledgement of mutual respectContinued personal connection despite disagreement
Future musical collaborationStrong evidence of renewed professional trust
Joint appearance or performanceMore visible reconciliation
Continued public criticism of each otherEvidence that the dispute remains active
No further public commentAmbiguous; neither confirms reconciliation nor a permanent split

None of these signals should be treated as conclusive on its own.

The artists around them have already taken sides on the touring question

The withdrawals by Finneas, Lukas Graham, Aaron Rowe and Beoga add another layer to the personal situation.

Their decisions demonstrate that the controversy has become a matter of principle for several musicians who were working alongside Sheeran. Their public statements have largely focused on artistic freedom, political expression and solidarity with Macklemore.

That does not necessarily mean they are taking a position on the private friendship between Macklemore and Sheeran.

It does, however, make reconciliation more complicated professionally. Sheeran’s relationship with other musicians on the tour has now become part of the wider public debate.

The relationship can survive—but it cannot simply ignore what happened

The evidence currently supports a cautious reading: Macklemore and Sheeran’s friendship has been seriously tested, but neither man’s public statement establishes that it has ended.

Macklemore has explicitly left room for the friendship to continue. Sheeran has described respect for Macklemore and said he attempted to find a solution rather than simply abandoning the relationship.

What makes reconciliation difficult is not merely that they disagree about Israel and Palestine. It is that the disagreement produced a concrete professional consequence: Macklemore lost his place on Sheeran’s tour, and other artists subsequently withdrew.

For the friendship to survive in a meaningful sense, the two would ultimately have to find a way to separate disagreement over political expression from personal trust. Whether they do that is not yet publicly known. For now, Macklemore’s statement leaves the door open, while Sheeran’s response suggests that he regards the relationship as something worth preserving—even though the two musicians now occupy very different positions over what happened on the Loop Tour.
