Kenya Power Announces Electricity Cuts in Nairobi and Eight Other Counties

Kenya Power has announced planned electricity interruptions affecting parts of Nairobi and several other counties during the week of September 14–19, 2026. The interruptions are scheduled maintenance outages, meaning affected customers should distinguish them from unplanned blackouts caused by faults or other system failures.

The latest notices indicate that the affected areas and outage times vary by location. Customers should therefore check the specific Kenya Power notice for their area rather than assuming that an entire county or city will be without electricity for the same period.

Why Kenya Power is switching off power

Planned outages are generally used to allow Kenya Power technicians to undertake maintenance, repairs, upgrades, connections or other work on electricity infrastructure while reducing risks to workers and the public.

The interruptions can affect residential neighbourhoods as well as commercial and industrial customers, depending on the network equipment being worked on.

Nairobi among the affected areas

Nairobi is included in the latest round of planned interruptions. Kenya Power’s notices specify individual areas and expected interruption periods rather than indicating that the whole capital will lose electricity.

Customers who depend on electricity for businesses, water pumping, refrigeration, internet equipment or other essential activities should therefore check the notice for their particular neighbourhood and plan around the published period.

Nine counties affected

The reported September 2026 schedule covers nine counties, including Nairobi and Nyeri. The precise locations and times differ across the affected counties.

The published schedules are particularly important for businesses because a planned interruption can coincide with normal working hours. Residents using electronic equipment should also consider switching off or unplugging sensitive appliances before the interruption and reconnecting them after supply has stabilised.

How to check whether your area is affected

Kenya Power provides customer-service channels for checking electricity information, reporting faults and managing accounts through its online self-service platform.

Customers can also use Kenya Power’s official communication channels for outage announcements and updates. If power remains unavailable after the scheduled restoration time, it is useful to check whether Kenya Power has issued a revised notice or report the problem as a fault.

Planned outage does not necessarily mean a prolonged blackout

A scheduled interruption is different from an unplanned outage. Kenya Power can publish a maintenance window during which electricity is expected to be interrupted, but the actual restoration time can depend on the work being undertaken and conditions on the network.

For households and businesses, the practical distinction is important: the published outage window is the period to prepare for, while restoration can be affected by operational circumstances.

The immediate issue for customers is therefore not simply whether Kenya Power has announced an outage, but whether their specific estate, street or business premises appears in the affected-area list. Checking the location-specific notice before relying on the electricity being available is the most useful precaution during the September 14–19 maintenance programme.
