Aadhaar details can be updated online or at an Aadhaar Enrolment/Update Centre, but the method depends on what you need to change. As of 2026, address updates can be submitted online through MyAadhaar, while changes such as name, date of birth, gender and biometric information generally require a visit to an Aadhaar centre. Mobile-number updates can also be made through the new official Aadhaar app, while biometric changes still require an in-person visit.
The most important thing to check before starting is whether your particular update is supported online. You need a mobile number registered with Aadhaar to use online Aadhaar services. UIDAI’s current guidance allows online address updating and document submission, but demographic changes such as name, date of birth and gender are handled at an Aadhaar centre. The Aadhaar number itself does not change when your personal details are updated.
Which Aadhaar Details Can You Update?
UIDAI divides Aadhaar updates broadly into demographic information and biometric information.
Demographic information includes:
- Name
- Address
- Date of birth or age
- Gender
- Mobile number
- Email address
- Certain relationship and information-sharing details
Biometric information includes:
- Photograph
- Fingerprints
- Iris scans
UIDAI says demographic and biometric information can be updated at Aadhaar Enrolment Centres, while its online services provide specific options for address and document updates.
The important distinction is that not every Aadhaar field can currently be changed online.
| Aadhaar update | Online | Aadhaar centre | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Address | Yes | Yes | Online update requires registered mobile authentication and supporting address proof |
| Name | No | Yes | Supporting documentation may be required |
| Date of birth/age | No | Yes | Supporting documentation is required where applicable |
| Gender | No | Yes | Centre-based update |
| Mobile number | Through official Aadhaar app; centre option also available | Yes | Online MyAadhaar availability differs from app-based mobile update |
| Email address | No through standard MyAadhaar demographic update | Yes | Centre-based update |
| Photograph | No | Yes | Biometric update required |
| Fingerprints | No | Yes | Biometric capture required |
| Iris | No | Yes | Biometric capture required |
| POI/POA document update | Yes | Yes | Online submission is available; current charges depend on the submission method and applicable UIDAI rules |
UIDAI’s current website says the Aadhaar app can update mobile number and address, while name, gender, email and date of birth are not currently available through the app.
Before You Start: Check What Actually Needs Updating
Before submitting an update request, review your Aadhaar information and identify every detail that needs correction.
This matters because if you are already visiting an Aadhaar centre for one change, it may be more efficient to update other required demographic information at the same time. UIDAI’s 2026 Aadhaar handbook notes that multiple demographic entries can be updated together at a centre for the same applicable demographic-update fee.
For example, if you have recently changed your address and also need to correct your email address, consider handling both during the same centre visit rather than making separate requests.
What Can Be Updated Online?
Online Aadhaar updating is more limited than centre-based updating.
UIDAI’s current online services specifically support address update through MyAadhaar, with online document submission also available. The Aadhaar number holder must have a registered mobile number because authentication uses an OTP.
The official Aadhaar app currently provides another route for mobile-number and address updates without requiring a visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra.
By contrast, biometric information and several demographic fields still require physical attendance.
How to Update Aadhaar Address Online
Address is the main Aadhaar demographic update that can be completed through the online MyAadhaar service.
Step 1: Open the official MyAadhaar portal
Go to the official MyAadhaar portal.
Do not enter your Aadhaar number or OTP on an unofficial website claiming to provide Aadhaar update services.
Step 2: Log in using your Aadhaar number
Online Aadhaar services require authentication with your Aadhaar number and a one-time password sent to your registered mobile number.
If you do not have access to the mobile number registered with Aadhaar, the online route may not be available to you.
Step 3: Select the address-update service
Choose the option for Address Update and follow the instructions displayed by the current MyAadhaar portal.
UIDAI says the online process allows an Aadhaar holder to submit an address-change request directly through MyAadhaar.
Step 4: Enter your new address
Enter the address carefully.
Pay particular attention to spelling, house or building information, locality, district, State and PIN code. UIDAI’s guidance says the address entered should match the address contained in the supporting document.
Step 5: Upload the supporting document
You will need an acceptable Proof of Address (PoA) document for a document-based address update.
UIDAI maintains a list of acceptable supporting documents, and the document is checked as part of the update process.
The scan or image should be clear and readable. UIDAI specifically advises that an uploaded document should be a clear, coloured scan of the original document.
Step 6: Submit the request
Review the information before submitting.
After submission, keep the acknowledgement or update request reference so that you can monitor the status.
An online submission is a request for an update, not an instant guarantee that the Aadhaar database has already changed. UIDAI says submitted address documents are subsequently verified through its processing system.
Can You Update Aadhaar Address Without Address Proof?
UIDAI also provides an address-update route involving a Head of Family (HoF) in eligible circumstances. The MyAadhaar service currently describes address updating using either documents or a family member’s Aadhaar.
This is different from simply entering a new address without evidence. The applicable HoF process has its own eligibility and authentication requirements.
If you have a suitable address document, the ordinary document-based route is generally the more straightforward option.
How to Update Your Aadhaar Mobile Number
Mobile-number updating has become more flexible with UIDAI’s newer Aadhaar app.
UIDAI’s current app FAQ says that mobile number and address can currently be updated directly through the Aadhaar app without visiting an Aadhaar Seva Kendra.
Aadhaar’s traditional centre-based route remains available as well. UIDAI’s enrolment and update guidance confirms that a mobile number can be updated by visiting an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre.
This distinction is important because older Aadhaar guides often state categorically that mobile-number changes can only be performed at a centre. That information no longer reflects UIDAI’s current app capabilities.
Why the mobile number matters
The registered mobile number is particularly important because it is used to authenticate many Aadhaar online services.
UIDAI states that a registered mobile number is essential for accessing Aadhaar online services.
If your old mobile number is no longer available and you need to change it, using the current official Aadhaar app route or visiting an Aadhaar centre may be more appropriate than trying to complete a MyAadhaar service that requires OTP delivery to the old number.
How to Update Aadhaar Name
A name change or correction is currently a centre-based update rather than a standard online MyAadhaar demographic update.
UIDAI says that name, gender and date of birth corrections can be handled by visiting an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre.
Step-by-step process
- Find an Aadhaar Enrolment/Update Centre.
- Take the required supporting document.
- Tell the operator that you want to update your name.
- Complete the update form or provide the information requested by the operator.
- Submit the supporting documentation for verification.
- Complete the required biometric authentication.
- Review the information before confirming the request.
- Collect the acknowledgement containing the update reference.
UIDAI’s centre-based process includes document verification where documentary evidence is required, and the operator provides an acknowledgement for tracking the request.
If the name change follows marriage, divorce or another legal event, use documentation that meets UIDAI’s applicable requirements rather than assuming that any document bearing the new name will automatically be accepted.
How to Update Date of Birth in Aadhaar
Date-of-birth updates also require a visit to an Aadhaar centre.
UIDAI identifies date of birth as one of the demographic fields that can be updated at an enrolment/update centre, with supporting documentation required for relevant updates.
This is an area where documentation matters particularly because a date-of-birth correction changes an important identity attribute.
Take an acceptable proof-of-date-of-birth document and ensure that the information you request is consistent with the supporting evidence.
Do not rely on an unofficial online service claiming that it can change your Aadhaar date of birth remotely.
How to Update Gender in Aadhaar
Gender is another demographic field that can be updated at an Aadhaar centre.
UIDAI’s current online-service guidance states that if demographic details such as name, gender or date of birth do not match the person’s actual identity details, the Aadhaar holder should visit an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre.
The operator will process the requested change through the centre’s update system and provide an acknowledgement for tracking.
How to Update Aadhaar Email Address
Email address can be updated at an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre.
UIDAI’s list of centre-based update services includes email along with name, address, date of birth, gender and mobile number.
The important distinction is that email update is not currently one of the demographic changes available through the Aadhaar app. UIDAI’s app FAQ specifically says that name, gender, email and date of birth updates are not currently available through the app.
How to Update Aadhaar Photo, Fingerprints or Iris
Biometric changes require an in-person visit.
UIDAI identifies the following as biometric information:
- Photograph
- Fingerprints
- Iris scans
These cannot currently be updated through the Aadhaar app. UIDAI says biometric updates must be performed at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or Aadhaar Enrolment/Update Centre.
The centre captures the required biometric information using the approved equipment.
Why biometric updates are different
A biometric update cannot be completed simply by uploading a photograph or document from home. Fingerprints, iris scans and the Aadhaar photograph have to be captured through the appropriate enrolment/update process.
This is why an online address update and a biometric update should not be treated as equivalent services.
How to Find an Aadhaar Enrolment or Update Centre
UIDAI provides the Bhuvan Aadhaar Portal for finding centres.
You can search by:
- Nearby location
- PIN code
UIDAI’s online-service guidance directs users to the Bhuvan Aadhaar Portal to find centres and check the services available at them.
You can also use UIDAI’s appointment system where applicable to schedule a visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra.
Not every centre necessarily offers every service at every moment, so checking the available service before travelling is sensible.
Do You Have to Visit the Same Centre Where Aadhaar Was Enrolled?
No.
UIDAI states that you do not have to return to the centre where your original Aadhaar enrolment took place. You can visit an Aadhaar Enrolment/Update Centre for demographic or biometric updates.
This is particularly useful for people who have moved to another city or State.
For example, if your Aadhaar was originally enrolled in Delhi but you now live in Bengaluru, there is generally no need to travel back to the original enrolment location simply to update your details.
What Documents Are Required for Aadhaar Updates?
The required document depends on the information you are changing.
UIDAI maintains an official List of Supporting Documents covering the documents accepted for relevant identity, address and other update purposes.
For document-based updates, the basic principle is straightforward: the document must be acceptable for the particular field you want to change, and the information in the document should support the requested update.
For example, an address update requires appropriate proof of address. A name or date-of-birth correction may require documentation appropriate to that particular field.
Do not assume that because a document is accepted for one Aadhaar purpose it will automatically be sufficient for every type of update.
How Much Does Aadhaar Update Cost?
Aadhaar update charges depend on the type of service and how it is performed.
UIDAI’s current centre charge information lists ₹75 for a demographic update when it is performed separately, while demographic updating performed at the same time as a biometric update is free under the applicable fee structure. Biometric updates have separate age-dependent charges and exemptions.
For POI/POA document updates, UIDAI’s current information says submission at an Aadhaar centre costs ₹75, while online submission through MyAadhaar is currently free until June 14, 2027.
Because UIDAI can revise charges and temporary exemptions, check the current fee displayed by the official portal or centre before paying.
What Happens at an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre?
The centre-based process generally follows these stages:
1. Choose the required update
Tell the operator which Aadhaar information needs to change.
2. Provide supporting documents
Where documentary evidence is required, the operator collects the appropriate documents for verification.
3. Enter or confirm the new information
Review spelling, dates, address components and other details carefully before the request is submitted.
4. Complete biometric authentication
The operator carries out the required authentication and, where relevant, captures updated biometric information.
5. Confirm the request
Check the information displayed before giving final approval.
6. Receive the acknowledgement
UIDAI’s centre process provides an acknowledgement containing a reference that can be used to track the update request.
Keep this acknowledgement until the update has been completed.
How to Check Aadhaar Update Status
After submitting an update, use UIDAI’s official status-check facility to monitor the request.
The acknowledgement or update reference is important because it provides the information needed to track the request.
Do not assume that the information has changed simply because the centre accepted your application. Aadhaar updates remain subject to UIDAI’s verification and processing.
If an update is rejected, check the reason given by UIDAI and determine whether the problem concerns documentation, data mismatch, image quality or another requirement.
How Long Does an Aadhaar Update Take?
There is no single processing time that applies equally to every Aadhaar update.
The time can depend on:
- Type of update
- Supporting-document verification
- Quality of submitted information
- Biometric processing
- UIDAI’s verification procedures
- Whether additional checks are required
For that reason, avoid relying on third-party websites promising a guaranteed completion time.
The more useful approach is to retain your update reference and check the request through UIDAI’s official status service.
What If Your Aadhaar Update Is Rejected?
An unsuccessful update does not necessarily mean that you cannot correct the information.
First, identify the reason for rejection.
Common practical problems can include:
- Supporting document does not meet the applicable requirement
- Information on the document does not match the requested update
- Poor-quality document image
- Incorrect information entered during submission
- Verification failure
- Biometric or authentication issue
For an online address update, make sure the address entered corresponds with the supporting address document. UIDAI specifically says that address information should match the address shown on the document.
If you remain unsure, use UIDAI’s official grievance and support channels rather than paying an unofficial agent to “fix” the update.
Can Multiple Aadhaar Details Be Updated at Once?
Yes.
UIDAI’s 2026 Aadhaar handbook says multiple demographic entries can be updated at an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre at the same time, and the applicable demographic-update fee does not increase simply because several demographic entries are updated together.
This makes a combined update useful when, for example, you need to change your address and mobile number during the same centre visit.
It also reduces the inconvenience of making several separate trips.
Should You Update Your Aadhaar Documents?
UIDAI recommends that Aadhaar holders update their supporting documents periodically.
Its current online-services information says residents are suggested to update their documents at least once every 10 years, and currently provides an online document-submission option through MyAadhaar.
This document update is distinct from changing your demographic information.
For example, submitting updated proof-of-identity and proof-of-address documents does not necessarily mean that your name or address is changing. It can instead refresh the supporting documents associated with your Aadhaar record.
What About the New Aadhaar App?
UIDAI’s newer Aadhaar app has expanded the number of services that can be completed without visiting a centre.
As of the current UIDAI guidance, the app supports mobile-number and address updates, along with services such as biometric locking/unlocking, authentication-history checks, e-Aadhaar download and other Aadhaar functions.
However, the app is not yet a complete replacement for Aadhaar centres. Name, gender, email and date-of-birth updates remain unavailable through the app according to UIDAI’s current FAQ, while biometric updates continue to require an in-person visit.
This division is likely to change as UIDAI expands digital services, so users should rely on the current official app and MyAadhaar interface rather than older online guides.
What to Check Before You Submit an Aadhaar Update
Before pressing submit online or approving a request at a centre, check:
- Your name spelling
- Date of birth
- Gender
- House or building details
- Street/locality
- District and State
- PIN code
- Mobile number
- Email address
- Supporting-document details
- Whether you actually need to change the information or only update supporting documents
This is especially important for addresses. A small spelling or PIN-code error can create a mismatch with the supporting document and complicate verification.
Protect Yourself From Fake Aadhaar Update Services
Aadhaar updates involve highly sensitive identity information, including biometric data and authentication credentials.
Use only official UIDAI services for online updates.
Be particularly cautious if a website or person asks you to:
- Send an Aadhaar OTP by WhatsApp
- Share your biometric information remotely
- Upload Aadhaar documents to an unknown website
- Pay an unofficial “processing fee”
- Give someone control of your phone during authentication
- Provide your Aadhaar credentials so another person can perform the update
UIDAI’s official portal and centres provide established mechanisms for authentication and document verification. There is no legitimate reason to give an unknown person unrestricted access to your Aadhaar OTP.
If you are also trying to replace a lost physical Aadhaar document, the separate process for recovering the number and downloading e-Aadhaar is covered in our step-by-step Aadhaar download and recovery guide.
The Right Update Method Depends on What You Need to Change
The simplest way to approach Aadhaar updating is to start with the specific field that needs correction, rather than looking for one universal “Aadhaar update” process.
For an address change, MyAadhaar provides an online route, provided you can authenticate with your registered mobile number and submit the required supporting information.
For a mobile-number change, the current Aadhaar app provides a digital option, while an Aadhaar centre remains available.
For name, date of birth, gender, email or biometric information, plan on using an Aadhaar Enrolment/Update Centre under the current service rules.
For supporting-document updates, MyAadhaar and Aadhaar centres both provide routes, with current fees and temporary exemptions depending on the method.
Most importantly, remember that an update changes the information associated with your existing identity; your Aadhaar number itself remains the same. Checking the current UIDAI rules before submitting the request is therefore more reliable than following an older third-party guide, particularly for mobile-app capabilities, fees and which updates are currently available online.
