Aadhaar enrolment is free, but several Aadhaar update services now carry a ₹75 or ₹125 charge depending on the type of change. As of October 5, 2026, a standard demographic update—such as changing a name, address, date of birth, gender, mobile number or email address—costs ₹75 when done separately at an Aadhaar centre. A biometric update generally costs ₹125, while certain mandatory biometric updates for children remain free under UIDAI’s prescribed rules.
Some temporary concessions make the current fee structure more complicated than a simple ₹75-or-₹125 rule. Document updates submitted through the myAadhaar portal are free until June 14, 2027, and UIDAI has waived the ₹75 charge for updating an email address through the Aadhaar mobile application until December 31, 2026. The Aadhaar PVC card, meanwhile, costs ₹75, including applicable taxes and delivery charges.

Is Aadhaar enrolment free?
Yes. Aadhaar enrolment itself does not carry a fee. UIDAI’s current service information lists enrolment as free of cost, including the generation of Aadhaar for residents covered by the enrolment process.
This is important because an enrolment centre should not charge a resident simply for enrolling for Aadhaar. The prescribed fees apply to particular update and related services rather than to the initial enrolment itself.
If an operator asks for money for an Aadhaar enrolment form, that is also not a legitimate separate charge. UIDAI’s published guidance has historically specified that enrolment and update forms themselves are not chargeable.
What does an Aadhaar update cost?
The answer depends on what you are changing.
Demographic updates: ₹75
UIDAI classifies changes to information such as the name, gender, date of birth, address, mobile number and email address as demographic updates. When such an update is carried out separately, the published fee is ₹75.
The distinction between a demographic update and a document update matters. Changing the information recorded in Aadhaar is different from simply submitting supporting documents to refresh the proof associated with the record.
Biometric updates: ₹125
A biometric update covers the Aadhaar holder’s photograph, fingerprints and iris information. The standard charge is ₹125 when the update is not covered by one of UIDAI’s free mandatory-update provisions.
The ₹125 figure is therefore not a universal fee for every person who needs a biometric update. Age and whether the update is a mandatory biometric update affect the amount payable.
Which children’s biometric updates are free?
UIDAI provides specific free mandatory biometric-update provisions for children.
A first biometric update between ages 5 and 7 is free, while the first or second mandatory biometric update between ages 15 and 17 is also free under the published schedule.
There was also a temporary waiver for the first mandatory biometric update of children aged 7 to 15, but that waiver ran through September 30, 2026. Because the current date is October 5, 2026, that temporary period has ended unless UIDAI announces another extension. The current published fee schedule therefore lists ₹125 for biometric updates otherwise subject to the standard charge.
This is one of the fees most likely to generate conflicting information online because older articles may still describe the temporary 7-to-15 waiver as active.
Is Aadhaar address update free?
Not generally.
A standard demographic address update is currently listed at ₹75 when performed separately.
However, there is an important distinction between updating the address information and submitting or refreshing supporting documents.
UIDAI currently allows document updates through the myAadhaar portal without a fee until June 14, 2027. The same document-update service at an Aadhaar centre costs ₹75.
Therefore, someone searching for a “free Aadhaar update” should check exactly which service they need rather than assuming every online update is free.
Email update has a temporary free option
UIDAI introduced a specific fee waiver for updating an email address through its Aadhaar mobile application.
The underlying standard charge is ₹75, but UIDAI’s June 2026 office memorandum waived that charge for six months from July 1 through December 31, 2026.
That makes the timing important: the email-update waiver is currently active on October 5, 2026, but it is not a permanent change to the standard fee.
After December 31, 2026, the charge could return unless UIDAI extends or changes the waiver.
What if you update several details at once?
Aadhaar fees should not be interpreted as a separate ₹75 charge for every field you change.
UIDAI’s published schedule treats multiple demographic fields updated in a single demographic-update request as one demographic update. Likewise, when demographic information is updated together with a biometric update, there is no separate demographic charge; the applicable biometric fee is the relevant charge.
This makes it sensible to identify all necessary corrections before submitting an update request rather than making several separate visits for changes that could have been handled together.
How much does an Aadhaar PVC card cost?
The Aadhaar PVC card costs ₹75, including applicable GST and speed-post charges. UIDAI raised the published rate from ₹50 to ₹75 in January 2026.
The PVC card is an optional physical representation of Aadhaar. Paying ₹75 for the PVC card does not mean that Aadhaar itself costs ₹75, and it is separate from the free electronic Aadhaar download.
For readers who simply need a digital copy, Aadhaar Card Download Online: How to Download e-Aadhaar Using Aadhaar Number, Enrollment ID or VID explains the available download methods.
Is downloading e-Aadhaar free?
Yes. UIDAI lists Aadhaar download as free through its online service.
That makes the electronic version the simplest option for someone who needs a copy of Aadhaar but does not need another physical card.
There is, however, a separate charge for an Aadhaar search and colour print at an Aadhaar centre. UIDAI’s current published information lists this service at ₹40.
The distinction is useful: downloading an electronic Aadhaar yourself is free, while asking a centre to perform the search and provide a colour print is a paid service.
Why Aadhaar fees change
Aadhaar charges are not permanently fixed historical figures. UIDAI can revise service fees or introduce temporary concessions through official memorandums and notifications.
The recent changes illustrate why older Aadhaar-fee articles can quickly become misleading. In 2026 alone, UIDAI revised the PVC-card rate from ₹50 to ₹75, extended free online document updates to June 2027, and introduced the temporary waiver for email updates through the Aadhaar mobile application.
For that reason, a useful evergreen reference should treat the official UIDAI fee schedule and current notifications as the authority, rather than assuming that a fee quoted in an older article remains valid.
What to check before paying an Aadhaar fee
Before completing an update, check three things:
The type of service: demographic update, biometric update, document update, enrolment or PVC-card order.
The channel: some services have different charges online and at an Aadhaar centre.
Whether a temporary waiver applies: UIDAI sometimes removes fees for particular services for a defined period.
In particular, document updates and demographic updates should not be confused. A document submission through myAadhaar can currently be free, while a separate demographic change at an Aadhaar centre costs ₹75. Similarly, an email update through the Aadhaar mobile application is temporarily free through December 31, 2026, even though the standard demographic-update charge is ₹75.
The fee that matters most is the one attached to your exact service
For most Aadhaar holders, the current structure is straightforward: new enrolment is free; ordinary demographic updates cost ₹75; standard biometric updates cost ₹125; document updates cost ₹75 at a centre but are currently free online through June 14, 2027; and the PVC card costs ₹75. Temporary exemptions, particularly for children’s mandatory biometric updates and email updates through the Aadhaar app, are the main reasons older fee tables may differ from the current position.
The practical rule for an evergreen reference is therefore to check the service and the date together. When UIDAI announces another fee revision or extends a waiver, the amount printed in an older news story may remain useful as historical context but should not be treated as the current Aadhaar charge.
